Do I need to sign up or create an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no account. The text is read entirely on your device by a free, open-source engine — nothing is uploaded.
Which languages are supported?
English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Hindi, Simplified Chinese, Arabic and Urdu. English is the most accurate. Arabic and Urdu are supported experimentally — text is reordered for right-to-left reading, but recognition can be imperfect.
Why does it download something the first time?
Each language uses a trained data model (a few megabytes). It is fetched once on first use and then stored in your browser cache, so later runs are instant and work offline.
How can I get better results?
Use sharp, well-lit images where the text is as large and straight-on as possible. Cropping to just the text area and using higher resolution both improve accuracy.
Does it handle handwriting?
The engine is designed for printed text. Neat handwriting sometimes works, but results are most reliable with printed or typed text.
